Robert Hsu discusses childhood obesity and nutrition with First Lady Michelle Obama.
Fitness for Life is privileged to have two faculty advisors: Dr. Joseph Libonati, Assistant Professor of Penn Nursing, and Dr. Mary Summers, Senior Fellow of the Fox Leadership Program and Political Science Lecturer.
Dr. Libonati has dedicated his time to teaching our group the scientific principles behind diet and exercise through a number of speaker events. He also serves an invaluable source of guidance to the board in preparing lesson plans and helping us teach the children during our weekly service trips to West Philadelphia schools. Likewise, Dr. Summers has served as a valuable resource for our organization since she teaches academically based community service courses, such as "Healthy Schools," which has allowed some of our members to advance our mission at Benjamin B. Comegys Elementary School. She has connected us with many elementary schools in West Philadelphia as well as several anti-obesity organizations and resources.
Fitness for Life is also grateful to have a partnership with Let's Move! In fact, board member Robert Hsu has met one-on-one with First Lady Michelle Obama and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker to discuss childhood obesity and nutrition in schools. Fitness for Life also has partnerships with with Playworks, which offers training sessions and volunteer opportunities for our members. In addition, as a member of the Civic House Associates Coalition and the Student Activities Council, Fitness for Life receives funding and makes use of opportunities to collaborate and network as well as other opportunities to enhance community involvement and advocacy work. We also have service partnerships with Phi Gamma Nu and Sigma Delta Tau, through which students from these Greek letter organizations can volunteer with us. Lastly, we are also a proud partner of the Penn Pre‐Medical Association (PennPMA). Working with PennPMA has enables Fitness for Life to showcase volunteering opportunities to a larger number of Penn students.
