Volunteer to Visit Schools

Interested in teaching children about health and fitness? Do you enjoy playing fun sports games with elementary school students?
Community service trips to local schools mostly occur on Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 3:30-5:00 during an after-school program. In the past, FFL members have visited Spruce Hill Christian School or Benjamin B. Comegys Elementary School through the course HSOC 335: Healthy Schools. Up to seven spots are available each week for general members. Please fill out the criminal background form below and bring it with you the day of your first visit. Also be sure to look through the school visit instructions document to read about some hints that will help you make the most of your visit.
After walking together as a group to the school, each visit will entail a brief interactive lecture and subsequent rotation around four stations. The lecture takes approximately ten to fifteen minutes, with a focus on a specific message. Past lectures have concerned topics such as the food pyramid, the importance of sportsmanship, and the importance of stretching. The lecture is intended to transform students from passive receivers of information into active users by having them both answer and ask questions.

After the mini-lecture, the elementary school students will apply what they have learned and rotate around three to four different stations, with ideally a pair of Fitness for Life members manning each station. Some examples of previous stations have included basketball, bowling, dancing, dodgeball, football, hockey, relay races, table tennis, and soccer. The overall objective of these games is to get the students moving and to teach them exercise is not only good for their overall health, but also a whole lot of fun.
